神经递质是人类行为的化学基础。研究证实行为病理大都由一个或数个神经递质缺失或增多失平衡引起。躯体疾病也可由于特殊的神经径路障碍引起,例如帕金森病(PD)。脑内神经递质分为生物原胺类、氨基酸类、肽类、乙酰胆碱类等。生物原胺类神经递质包括:多巴胺(DA)、去甲肾上腺素(NE)、肾上腺素(E)、5-羟色胺(5-HT)也称(血清素)。氨基酸类神经递质包括:γ-氨基丁酸(GABA)、甘氨酸、谷氨酸、组胺。肽类神经递质分为:内源性阿片肽、P 物质、神经加压素、胆囊收缩素(CCK)、生长抑素、血管加压素和缩宫素、神经肽 Y。其它神经递质还有:核苷酸类、花生酸碱、阿南德酰胺、sigma 受体(σ受体)。在突触后膜或效应器细胞膜上有能与神经递质相结合的特殊蛋白质,称神经递质受体或突触后受体。许多精神药物作用于神经递质受体。
