自噬是一个涉及到细胞自身物质或结构被溶酶体或液泡分解的过程。先是内质网脱落的双层膜包裹细胞内部分受损或老化的细胞器、蛋白质等成分形成自噬体,后与溶酶体或液泡融合降解其所包裹的内容物,以实现细胞本身的代谢需要和某些细胞器的更新。细胞自噬与细胞凋亡、细胞衰老一样,是十分重要的生物学现象,参与生物的发育、生长等多种过程,细胞自噬的异常导致癌细胞的出现。
