β-Glucosidase 1A, Pectobacterium carotovorum (EC 3.2.1.21), is a glucosidase that targets the β1→4 glycosidic bonds between glucose or glucose-substituted molecules, such as the disaccharide cellobiose. As part of the cellulase family, β-Glucosidase contributes to the breakdown of cellulose and related polysaccharides; it functions as an exocellulase with specificity for various β-D-glucoside substrates. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of the terminal, non-reducing β-D-glucoside residues, releasing glucose.
