DMDM hydantoin (Glydant) is a sensitizer and a formaldehyde-releasing preservative. The release of formaldehyde from DMDM hydantoin is influenced by various factors and increases in alkaline environments. It can induce allergic contact dermatitis either directly or through released formaldehyde via a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction. As a broad-spectrum preservative, DMDM hydantoin is effective against fungi, yeasts, Gram-positive, and Gram-negative bacteria. It is widely used in the cosmetics industry (such as shampoos, hair sprays, and skincare products) and can also be employed in research on allergic contact dermatitis.
