(S)-Nandinine synthase (EC 1.14.21.12) is a cytochrome P-450 heme-thiolate enzyme that catalyzes an oxidation reaction which does not incorporate oxygen into the product. It facilitates the oxidative cyclization of adjacent phenolic hydroxy and methoxy groups of (S)-Scoulerine to form the methylenedioxy bridge of the protoberberine alkaloid, (S)-Nandinine.
