Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) is a glycoprotein gonadotropin derived from the serum of pregnant mares. It exhibits FSH/LH-like activity and promotes follicular development and ovulation in animals. Its effects are primarily mediated through the regulation of endocrine signaling along the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, as well as by promoting the proliferation of ovarian granulosa cells and the secretion of estrogen, thereby influencing the progression of the reproductive cycle. In livestock production, PMSG is commonly used to induce estrus and improve reproductive efficiency; it is also widely used in research on reproductive endocrinology and the mechanisms regulating the estrous cycle.
